Hearing Today On Fight Over “Christian” Housing Area

A Michigan resort community requires that homeowners be of a ‘Christian persuasion.’

It has resulted in a lawsuit.

A hearing on the issue is scheduled for today in Kalamazoo Federal Court.
Bay View is a seasonal community along Little Traverse Bay near Petoskey.

It doesn’t allow non-Christians to buy a home in the community.

Supports of the restriction say it doesn’t make sense to have members who don’t embrace the communities views on the future of their Christian organization.

Opponents filed a federal lawsuit saying the restriction violates their First Amendment rights.

An attorney said the community is operating as both a state and religious entity and they can’t have it both ways.
