Undertow Pulls Swimmers Under At Grand Haven

Police say two people drowned  and several were hospitalized after they were pulled under the water by strong currents off the beach at Grand Haven on Lake Michigan.

Authorities asked people to stay out of Lake Michigan at Grand Haven City Beach and Grand Haven State Park on Sunday.

A swimmer was reported struggling in the water near the State Park Pavilion building. Bystanders formed a human chain to help search for the swimmer and a short time later the body of 64 year old David Knaffle was lfound
A few hours later bystanders pulled a 46-year-old west Michigan man man from the water. The man was hospitalized in serious condition.
Several people were found struggling in the water again, including a 20-year-old Lansing man and a 17-year-old female. Police say they located the man’s body about 5 feet from shore.

More distress calls came in throughout the afternoon. No one else was found in the water or had to be rescued.
