Detroit Towing Controversy Meeting

Detroit Police Chief James Craig plans to meet today with the owners of towing firms concerned about a new change in city towing policies in light of a scandal.

The owners are concerned the new policies will force them out of business.

The police department is taking over as the primary tower portion of the city’s police towing operations.

Craig said the changes had been planned for some time and come amid concerns over an ongoing federal corruption probe.

He said the changes were not in response to a new state law that takes effect this coming Sunday which prohibits municipalities from towing.

Craig says he plans to assure private towing companies at today’s meeting that the city will still be using private towing.

But they say if police take half of their tows, they won’t be able to survive.
