New Workers Re-Start Road Jobs

Paving the way with new workers.

Will non-union workers be able to finish the road jobs of unionized workers?
A contractor’s association is hiring new workers to operate heavy equipment on major road construction projects. The old workers union refused to negotiate a new contract with the association when the contract expired in June. The contractors locked them out in August.
Contractor’s spokesman Mike Nystrom, of the Michigan Infrastructure Transportation Association, says work has begun on some projects.

The Heavy Equipment Operator’s union says the contractors wanted to break the union all along. They have not said what their next move will be.
