Educators Sort Thru Social Studies Controversy

A new task force is being formed by the Michigan Department of Education to review thousands of suggestions for the revision of social studies standards in the schools.

The standards set expectations for what students are to learn by the end of each grade.
They became the center of controversy this past spring when republican state Senator Patrick Colbeck proposed several controversial revisions that included the elimination of the term, ‘core democratic values.’

Public reaction led the department of education to schedule public hearings over the summer.

The department will take additional comments through Sunday.

It has already received some 4-thousand comments.

If you want to be a member of the task force selected to review the comments, you must apply online, by tomorrow, to the state department of educations web site.
