Detroit Councilman Indicted

Detroit City Councilman Gabe Leland has been indicted by a federal grand jury on bribery charges that he accepted $15,000 from a business owner.

Leland, who represents council district 7, was charged with bribery conspiracy and two counts of bribery. A Leland staffer, Elissa Grubbs, was charged in the alleged conspiracy yesterday. Grubbs is expected to plead guilty.

The indictment is part of a public corruption campaign that began in Macomb County. More than 20 people have been charged.

“A sitting member of the Detroit City Council engaging in bribery is an extreme breach of the trust of the people of Detroit that badly undermines their faith in local government,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Schneider said in a written statement.
