Trump Could Make Move To Discourage GM Closings

Does Pres. Trump have a trump card in any efforts to respond General Motors’ decision to lay off 14-thousand workers?

It has rocked the communities that surround the five plants that G-M is considering closing. Two of the plants are here.
All of the products currently assembled at those three plants — Buick LaCrosse, Cadillac CT6, Cadillac XTS, Chevrolet Impala, Chevrolet Cruze and Chevrolet Volt — are scheduled to stop being produced for the U.S. by the end of 2019.

General Motors says the restructuring to cut costs and focus more on autonomous and electric vehicles is designed to avoid even greater cutbacks in the future.

.The reduction includes 8,100 white-collar workers, some of whom will take buyouts and others who will be laid off. Most of the affected factories build cars that won’t be sold in the U.S. after next year. They could close or they could get different vehicles to build. They will be part of contract talks with the United Auto Workers union next year.

Some are speculating that Trump could put more auto tariffs on imported cars, making it more expensive for U-S automakers to send in vehicles that they build in cheaper labor countries like China.
