Unusual Crucifix Viewing Set This Weekend

People will be allowed to view a crucifix showing the crucified Jesus which lies in 20 feet of water off Petoskey in Lake Michigan this weekend.
Poor ice and weather have forced cancellation of the viewing event in recent years.
But this Saturday, people will be led onto the ice to look into the water and see the crucifix statue of Christ in the water.
Divers view the 11 foot marble statue, lying face-up in the water, during the summer. The winter event allows non-divers the chance to look through the clear water and see the crucifix which is a memorial to those who have lost their lives on the water.
The Petoskey Visitors Bureau has scheduled the event from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. this Saturday.
Viewing is at your own risk.
The statue was built by a Petoskey-area farm family in the 50’s for a 15 year old boy who died in a farm accident.
The statue was made in Europe, but it broke in transit, and the family gave it to their church. The church sold it to a diving club in Wyandotte who repaired it and placed it in the water as a memorial to one of their members in the 1960’s.
It became a memorial for all who have lost their lives in the water.
It was repaired again in the 1980’s, and put back into the water 800 feet off shore from a park in Petoskey.
