Auto Reform Bills Pass

An auto insurance reform plan is coming out of the Michigan Senate.
Republicans passed bills to let drivers pass up personal injury insurance as long as they have other health insurance to cover medical costs. Motorists would no longer be required to pay for unlimited medical coverage for the most severe injuries.
Health care providers would be required to use rates that are currently in effect for worker’s compensation claims. Hospitals currently are allowed to charge higher rates if auto insurance is covering the claim.
The plan has passed a committee and is expected to be approved by the full state senate.
Democrats object. They want a guarantee that rates will go down. They also want credit scores and zip codes to be dropped for determining insurance rates.
