No Fault Reform Plan Faces Rocky Road

Gov. Whitmer promises to veto Senate-passed auto insurance legislation if it gets to her desk.

The Senate approved a bill that would eliminate Michigan’s system requiring drivers to buy unlimited medical coverage for the most severe crash injuries. Drivers  would be able to buy a lower amount of coverage or no coverage  if they have health insurance that would pay the bills.
The House has it’s own ideas on auto insurance.

Whitmer says the legislation “preserves a corrupt system where insurance companies are allowed to unfairly discriminate in setting rates and cuts drivers’ coverage.”

Republicans say their legislation would greatly reduce the unlimited fee and insurers would have to cut rates.

The legislation prohibits insurance companies from using gender and ZIP codes  in determining rates.
