Decision Looms In Grosse Pointe Schools

A suburban school district is trying to fix an ongoing problem.

Grosse Pointe Public School System has been dealing with a drop in student enrollments for 15 years.

School officials, parents and taxpayers are now trying to decide how to bring spending in line with expenses.

They have recommended closing one of two elementary school in the north end of the district and one in the south end.

This has raised concerns from parents at the affected schools concerning, among other things, transportation and scheduling.

Another option that has raised concerns would be moving 5th graders out of elementary schools into the middle schools that currently serve grades 6 through 8.

A Blue Ribbon Committee formed to come up with answers has set a June 30th deadline for approving a plan to save the district between one and two million dollars a year.
