State Budget Passes, Guv Calls It ‘A Mess’

Republicans in the Michigan Legislature passed a budget for the 2020 fiscal year. They say it has more money for roads and schools. Gov. Whitmer calls the budget a mess.

The $5.3 billion transportation budget puts an additional $400 million in general fund money into roads and bridges, plus $325 million in income tax revenues under a previous road funding deal, which hiked fuel taxes and registration fees.
The budget passed along party lines.
Gov. Whitmer has 14 days to sign it, veto it, or use a line-item veto on selected items.
Senate GOP leader Mike Shirkey tells WJR he expects Whitmer to carry out some line-item vetoes but does not expect her to veto the entire budget. Shirkey says he wants negotiations to resume with the governor on long-term road funding.
