Parking Fine Break For Detroiters

Detroiters get a break on parking fines.

Effective today, residents who get a ticket for parking meter and no-parking zone violations can have those 45-dollar tickets reduced by 50-percent, if they take care of the ticket within five business days.

Supporters say the measure will provide relief for low-income residents who are visiting the downtown area.

Critics raised concern about the cost of processing the tickets and trying to prove eligibility.

To qualify, drivers must reside in Detroit and their vehicles must be registered in the city.

The question of whether not allowing the discount for non-residents might lead to lawsuits has been raised because streets like Woodward are state funded.
