SOUTHFIELD, MICHIGAN, May 16, 2022 ~ A Southfield charter school is welcoming more than 100 Ukrainian refugee students as millions of people escape the embattled European country.
AGBU Alex & Marie Manoogian School is also donating clothes and other resources to the students after they fled with grandparents, siblings, or even alone, in some cases.
“The other Ukrainian students we have here who are not refugees are stepping up and translating and helping out … they are the mediators,” said AGBU Alex & Marie Manoogian School Preschool, Elementary & Middle School Principal Sonia Kalfayan.
“We have a lot of high school students stepping down to the middle school to help out with those students … they have like a buddy system now.”
