Former Birmingham Mayor Faces Eviction after Advocating for Fair Tenant Treatment

BIRMINGHAM, Michigan, November 3, 2022 ~ Nearly 75 people protested near the Baldwin House in Birmingham Thursday to protest what some say is the unfair eviction of one of its residents.

Current and former Birmingham mayors, Oakland County commissioners and seniors turned out to support former Birmingham Mayor Dorothy Conrad, an 88-year-old resident of the building. In fact, it was through her efforts as mayor that the Baldwin House was built in the 1980’s to set aside a portion of apartments for the area’s low-income seniors.

Conrad, who remains deeply invested in local issues, is being evicted from the building because some say she speaks out on issues like parking.

Conrad told seniors living in the building they were supposed to have free parking in the city lot across the street. They were instead charged $90 a month for spaces that others paid $50, which did not sit well with many, including Oakland County Commissioner Chuck Moss, who says it is shameful how Conrad has been treated.

(CONTINUED) Conrad’s Attorney Joe Wlosek says his client has until tomorrow to sign a new lease, but there is one sticking point. The contract includes a provision not included in other building leases he’s seen.

He says the new lease contains broad language that basically prohibits Conrad from talking to other building residents about problems in Baldwin House.

Baldwin House management is perplexed as to why any demonstrators were out here this morning. The fact is that Ms. Conrad has had, through her attorney, a lease to sign. A lease that has identical terms as the lease that all other Baldwin House residents are asked to sign. A lease that she was initially presented with back in September. If Ms. Conrad is willing to sign this lease and abide by Baldwin House rules, we encourage her to do so.”
