DETROIT July 5, 2023 ~ Wayne State University just picked its first ever female president.
Kimberly Andrews Espy was voted unanimously by the WSU Board of Governors Friday, June 30 to be the 13th president in the university’s history. She replaces current President M. Roy Wilson, who has served in the role for the past 10 years.
Espy joins the research university with a background in neuroscience and a lengthy background in higher education, she told 760 WJR’s Paul W. Smith. She is the current provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

(CONTINUED) She is excited to utilize her knowledge of higher education leadership and public university research at WSU, Espy added.
“I am looking forward to join the community at the end of the month (and) getting to know a lot more about Detroit,” Espy said to Smith. “What an asset to be joining an historic city that is really on the move. I am excited to be here!”
WSU had been searching for a replacement for Wilson over the past year, when he made his announcement to depart the university. Espy will officially step into her new role Aug. 1 of this year.
