LANSING, Sept. 25, 2023 ~ While Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and other state Democrats are pushing for paid family and medical leave for all Michiganders, business leaders worry about how this requirement would affect small businesses.

State Sen. Erika Geiss (D-Taylor) introduced the Family Medical Leave Act earlier this year, with supporters of the policy saying that the U.S. is one of the only countries to not mandate businesses to provide parental leave. In 2020, Whitmer extended 12 weeks of paid sick and medical leave for all state employees, though she said in a recent speech that 77% of Michiganders still do not have access to any medical leave.

However, some small businesses worry about affording medical leave. Brian Calley, president and CEO of the Small Business Association of Michigan, spoke more about their concerns on “JR Morning with Guy Gordon, Lloyd Jackson, and Jamie Edmonds.”
