DETROIT, Oct. 12, 2023 ~ A lawsuit alleging the dilution of Black voters in Detroit-area legislative districts is set to appear in a federal court Thursday, saying they violate the Voting Rights Act and the U.S. Constitution.

Twenty Detroit-area voters filed the lawsuit in March 2022, alleging new State House and Senate districts created by the Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission were racially gerrymandered, thus reducing the power of Black voters in the majority-Black city. The number of majority-Black districts was reduced from 11 to seven in the House, and two to zero in the Senate. The commission continues to defend its maps, with members saying the commission followed the process correctly.
