DETROIT, Oct. 17, 2023 ~ About 3,700 Detroit casino workers walked off the job Tuesday afternoon to strike MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino, and Hollywood Casino after the unions and companies could not reach an agreement.

The Detroit Casino Council, which represents five unions covering most workers across the three major Detroit casinos, has been pushing for better benefits and wages in the new contract. Union representatives and members said the companies did not offer “fair contracts” amid growing revenue from online gambling, which Michigan legalized in 2021.

MGM Grand announced in a press release that it plans to stay open for customers during the strike, and that the company will, “Continue to have meaningful discussions with the union.”

More coverage of the strike will be on 760 WJR.
