LANSING, Oct. 19, 2023 ~ While the Michigan Senate passed a resolution Wednesday formally condemning Hamas and recognizing the suffering of Palestinian civilians during the Israel-Hamas war, a similar bill flounders in the State House as members are divided over its language.

The Senate bill was sponsored by State Sen. Jeremy Moss (D-Southfield), which condemns “The terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas in Israel on October 7, 2023.” The bill also quoted President Joe Biden: “We can’t lose sight of the fact that the overwhelming majority of Palestinians had nothing to do with Hamas and Hamas’ appalling attacks.”

(CONTINUED) However, State Reps. Samantha Steckloff (D-Farmington Hills), Noah Arbit (D-West Bloomfield), Abraham Aiyash (D-Hamtramck), and Alabas Farhat (D-Dearborn) are concerned that the House bill introduced last week does not address the suffering of Palestinian civilians in the conflict along with supporting “Israel’s right to self-defense.” While Steckloff co-sponsored the bill, she said the bill’s main sponsor Bill G. Schuette (R-Midland) minimally consulted her and Arbit, the only two Jewish members of the House, when making the bill and did not feel represented by it.

While she still condemns Hamas, Steckloff said the legislature should focus on supporting Jewish and Muslim Michiganders facing intimidation during the war. Schuette criticized the Democratic majority for not advancing the bill, telling the Detroit Free Press that it is “A moral abdication of our duty as a government to call out evil.”
