Rep. Tom Emmer Drops Bid for House Speaker Hours After Becoming Nominee, Michigan Rep. Jack Bergman Falls at Second Vote

WASHINGTON D.C., Oct. 24, 2023 ~ Republican House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (MN-6) was the GOP‘s nominee for House speaker for only four hours before dropping out of the race, with Michigan‘s U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman losing his bid early on in the voting process.

A chaotic day for the House GOP saw Emmer drop out Tuesday afternoon after realizing he would not get enough support to win a vote on the House floor, with a candidate forum scheduled for 6 p.m. Bergman, (MI-1) was voted out of the second round of voting to be nominee, with House members voting between eight candidates.
