LANSING, Nov. 28, 2023 ~ Recently, 25 Michigan state lawmakers signed a letter calling on President Joe Biden to push for a permanent ceasefire of Israel‘s bombing campaign in Gaza, to condemn Hamas‘ Oct. 7 attack on Israel, and call for the immediate release of Israeli hostages.
The letter was signed Nov. 22, shortly after a temporary truce was agreed upon by Israel and Hamas to allow for Israeli hostage and Palestinian prisoner exchanges and to allow aid into Gaza. The letter mentions that the United Nations, World Health Organization, and Amnesty International have also called for a ceasefire amid the humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian territory.

(CONTINUED) Some political figures like former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton have expressed concerns that a ceasefire would let Hamas regroup and prepare for another attack, while others like U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib (MI-12) have said a ceasefire would stop civilian casualties in Gaza while opening the door for peace negotiations between Palestinian authorities and Israel.
Support for a ceasefire in Gaza is growing across the U.S., shown by the Detroit City Council passing a resolution last week that supports a ceasefire and a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll finding that 68% of U.S. residents agree that there should be one. Biden so far has repeatedly shot down a permanent ceasefire amid his strong support for the Israeli government.
