DETROIT, Jan. 4, 2023 ~ The city of Detroit saw the lowest number of murders since 1966, with the Detroit Police Department recording 252 homicides in 2023.

This was an over 18% drop from 2022’s recorded 309 murders, a promising sign for the city that has long been stigmatized with high crime rates. The drop in homicides coincides with a decrease in crime across the country in 2023, though Detroit Police Chief James White said there is still much to work on with violent crime prevention in the city.
