COLLEGE PARK, MD, Jan. 21, 2024 ~ The Michigan State Spartans defeated the Maryland Terrapins 61-59 in a Big Ten Conference matchup that went down to the wire.
Led by Tre Holloman, the Spartans came out hot and went on a 17-1 run minutes into the first half of that game at the Xfinity Center in College Park, Maryland. Holloman shot 100% from the field and a perfect 3/3 from the three-point line allowing MSU to get out to a 12-point lead going into halftime.
After allowing the most points scored on them in the first half all season, the Terrapins were able to force the Spartans into shooting 2/16 to begin the second half. With roughly 12 minutes remaining in the game, Maryland was able to tie up the score.
Maryland’s Donta Scott and Jahmir Young were willing the Terrapins offensively with a combined 35 points. The Spartans, despite their offensive struggles, had four scorers with over 12 points. MSU got out to a four-point lead with 44 seconds left until Young hit a tough layup to get Maryland within 2. The Terrapins were able to force a stop to get the ball back with 7 seconds left and put the ball in Young’s hands. Holloman was able to force a turnover on Young to hand Michigan State their 12th win of the season.
