Michigan Board of Education Concerned Over Whitmer’s MiLEAP Funding

MICHIGAN, Feb. 20, 2024 ~ Gov. Gretchen Whitmer‘s new Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential (MiLEAP) is already causing a ire among state education leaders.

In Whitmer’s proposed budget for the next fiscal year, 75% of the Department of Education‘s funds would be transferred to MiLEAP, which has has raised concerns with some members of the State Board of Education about if this move is constitutional in Michigan. MiLEAP, which launched in December, was created to enroll children into pre-K and create paths for higher education.
