Michigan Father Is the First Charged Under State’s New Gun Storage Law After Daughter Accidentally Shoots Herself

FLINT, Feb. 21, 2024 ~ A Flint father was charged with multiple felonies after his child unintentionally shot herself with his gun, with the Genesee County Prosecutor‘s office the first to use Michigan‘s new safe storage gun law to lay out one of the charges.

Michael Tolbert, 44, was arraigned over the weekend on charges of first-degree child abuse, a felony violation of Michigan’s firearms storage law, being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, lying to a police officer during an investigation, and multiple counts of felony firearm violations. His 2-year-old daughter, Skye McBride, is still in critical condition at a hospital after she shot herself through the eye on Feb. 14, the day after the new law went into effect.
