Detroit-Based Organization Helps Formerly Incarcerated People Avoid Prison Re-Entry

May 13, 2024 ~ About 70% of prisoners released from prison are arrested again within five years, according to data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics, with the recidivism rate for prisoners with juvenile records at over 80%.

In Wayne County, the One Detroit Violence Reduction Partnership is working to help those with criminal convictions stay out of prison. Dawn Ison, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan, is spearheading the program and said the program is a holistic approach to the problem of recidivism by bringing together law enforcement, city officials, Michigan Department of Corrections, and community-based organizations to support parolees.

(CONTINUED) The program brings together 100 people who are on probation, live in high-crime areas, and are at moderate or severe risk of reoffending for a round table where issues of reentry are addressed. In the last year, 160 parolees have attended the round tables, with Ison’s office adding that they have seen a “Significant decline in the recidivism rate among the individuals who have attended the roundtables, especially related to violent offenses.” Due to this success, the program will soon be introduced in Flint.
