DETROIT, May 21, 2024 ~ A Detroit police lieutenant has been put on administrative leave after shouting, “Go back to Mexico,” at a pro-Palestinian protestor, which many people have called racist.

A video from a protest against President Joe Biden‘s Sunday visit to Detroit shows Detroit police Lt. Brandon Cole directing the phrase at prominent, Detroit-area activist Lexi Zeidan, who is Palestinian, not Mexican. Detroit Police Department Chief James White said he was “outraged” about the comment in a press conference, and said an internal investigation is being conducted. White claimed the comment was not made based on race, but on Zeidman’s recent trip to Mexico, to which she responded by saying Cole would only know this if he was tracking her social media.
