New Study Finds That Michigan Teacher Salaries Fall Below National Average

MICHIGAN, May 21, 2024 ~ Michigan public school teacher salaries have declined over the past couple of decades to below the national average, according to a new study.

The Education Policy Innovation Collaborative at Michigan State University recently published a study that shows Michigan is ranked 39th in starting teacher salaries at $38,963, and overall yearly salaries fell by 20.6% between 1999-2021 when adjusted for inflation. Jason Burns of MSU told Paul W. Smith that, “Teachers in Michigan aren’t paid terribly well, but we also found significant public support for increasing teacher salaries.”
