DETROIT, June 17, 2024 ~ Former President and convicted felon Donald Trump gave two speeches on Saturday in Detroit in an attempt to court voters and drum up support from the Republican base.

In a city where he won just 5% of the vote in 2020, Trump first made a stop at the 180 Church, claiming that he would be better for Black citizens than President Joe Biden and that violent crime is rising in Black communities to a roughly 50% white audience. His statements are contradicted by recent statistics from the FBI that show violent crime in the U.S. fell between 2021 and 2022.

Turning Point is a far-right group co-founded by controversial conservative radio host Charlie Kirk, who has garnered criticism for his comments on race and attracting neo-Nazis and white supremacists to his organization, according to the Anti-Defamation League.

Recent polls have shown that Biden and Trump are virtually tied for their presidential rematch this November, even after Trump’s recent felony conviction, though polls released in June show that he is slightly ahead.
