Biden Drops From Race, Endorses VP Harris to be Party Nominee

GREENVILLE, Delaware, July 22, 2023 ~ Following weeks of concern over his declining abilities and mounting evidence of a narrowing path to victory, President Joe Biden withdrew himself Sunday from the 2024 presidential election. 

It has the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President,” Biden wrote in a letter published on X. “And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”

(CONTINUED) The letter, which was released while Biden was in isolation at his home in Delaware due to a COVID-19 diagnosis, was quickly followed by a second X post, this one endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as his replacement. 

My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President,” wrote Biden. “And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year.

(CONTINUED) The president’s announcements all but ushered to a close Biden’s five-decade career of public service, including 36 years as a United States senator and eight years as vice president to President Barak Obama.

A chorus of Democrat and world leaders soon chimed in to laud the elder statesman’s decision. 

@JoeBiden has always put our country first,” wrote House Speaker Emeritus Nancy Pelosi on X. “His vision, values and leadership make him one of the most consequential Presidents in American history. #AmericaLovesJoe for always believing in the promise of America and giving people the opportunity to reach their fulfillment.

Attention now turns to Vice President Harris, as the pundits ponder her path to the nomination, her choice for a running mate, and her chances for defeating Donald Trump in November.
