Michigan’s Paul Whelan Released in Prisoner Swap

MICHIGAN, AUG. 1, 2024 ~ Michigan native Paul Whelan and Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich are a part of a prisoner swap between the U.S. and Russia.

Whelan, a former marine from Novi, has been in Russian custody since 2018 on charges of espionage, something he and the U.S. deny. They were swapped for Russian prisoners who were in allied custody, but few other details are known.
