Michigan’s Paul Whelan Back in the U.S. After Prisoner Swap

MICHIGAN, AUG. 2, 2024 ~ Former marine and Michigan resident Paul Whelan is back in the U.S. after years in Russian custody. Whelan, who was arrested on espionage charges in Russia in 2018, touched down late Thursday evening to meet with President Joe Biden after a prisoner swap.

MICHIGAN, AUG. 1, 2024 ~ Michigan native Paul Whelan and Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich are a part of a prisoner swap between the U.S. and Russia.

Whelan, a former marine from Novi, has been in Russian custody since 2018 on charges of espionage, something he and the U.S. deny. They were swapped for Russian prisoners who were in allied custody, but few other details are known.
