MSU Volleyball Looking to Make Championship Jump in Leah Johnson’s Third Year

DETROIT, August 13, 2024 ~ In just two short years, Michigan State Head Volleyball Coach Leah Johnson has taken a struggling program and turned it into one with a championship foundation. In two seasons, her team jumped from 11 wins the year prior to her arrival to now being considered an upcoming contender in the Big Ten.

In her first season in 2022, she worked on building momentum for the squad, facilitating a move to the Breslin Center. It was the first time the historic basketball venue hosted a volleyball match in over a decade, and the palpable change of energy helped them improve on their 2021 season with 13 wins in 2022.

(CONTINUED) They have steadily continued to improve as 2023 saw them rack up 17 wins, the most the team has seen since 2018. Highlighted by a season sweep over rival Michigan, which helped boost them to sixth in the loaded conference standings, the Spartans will be gunning for an even bigger improvement in 2024.

It won’t be easy with newcoming Big Ten volleyball powerhouses like UCLA, but with a number of notable transfers like junior All-SEC outside hitter Akasha Anderson and the retention of players like senior defensive specialist Nalani Iosia, the squad will not be short in star power going into a defining third year for Johnson.
