MICHIGAN, Aug. 13, 2024 ~ Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has requested the U.S. Department of Agriculture to declare a federal disaster over the state’s drastic losses in the 2024 cherry harvest.

She sent a letter to the agency on Aug. 2, following an abysmal cherry season that saw growers lose up to 75% of their cherry crops due to poor weather, insects, and diseases. The disaster declaration would allow cherry growers to receive low-interest federal loans and other federal assistance.
