ANN ARBOR, October 26, 2024 ~ Michigan State football (4-4) could not convert on two critical fourth downs to take a 24-17 loss on the road against the Michigan Wolverines (5-3).

On the first drive, MSU had a chance to get ahead with a touchdown but got called for a penalty near the goal line on fourth down. After the penalty, graduate kicker Jonathan Kim missed a 25-yard field goal to squander the possession. Near the end of the night, the green and white had a chance to tie it up around the two minute warning. While the first down marker was a difficult nine yards away, sophomore quarterback Aidan Chiles‘ pass to the end zone fell short, sealing the win for the Wolverines.

Spartan redshirt junior running back Nate Carter had an impressive night, scoring the game’s first touchdown while rushing for 118 yards.

(CONTINUED) Just too many missed opportunities,” Carter told WJR Correspondent Nick Lundberg after the game. “We have to be able to convert in the red zone and come out there and execute.”

For the most part, MSU’s offense took care of the ball. Besides for one fumble that only resulted in three points, Chiles played a clean game. He finished the night with 189 passing yards and a touchdown to freshman wide receiver Nick Marsh, who made a couple defenders miss on the way to the end zone.

Michigan also won the penalty battle as they did not commit a single one all night, while the Spartans racked up six for 35 yards.

MSU’s defense contained Michigan’s offense for most of the night, but could not figure out how to stop the legs of junior quarterback Alex Orji. The backup finished with 64 rushing yards and a touchdown. Redshirt senior linebacker Jordan Turner was also ejected from the game for targeting. He will miss the first half of next weekend’s game.

Michigan State will come back to East Lansing next Saturday for an afternoon matchup against undefeated Indiana.
