ANN ARBOR, Oct. 31, 2024 ~ A non-U.S. citizen student at the University of Michigan was charged over allegedly casting an illegal ballot, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit announced Wednesday in a statement.
The individual, who is in the country legally, was charged with a felony unauthorized attempt to vote and perjury for making a false affidavit to register to vote. In the statement, Benson and Savit said the clerk took “swift action” with the alleged illegal vote that was tabulated and that “Noncitizen voting is an extremely isolated and rare event. Investigations in multiple states and nationwide have found no evidence of large numbers of noncitizens registering to vote.“
