EAST LANSING, November 30, 2024 ~ Michigan State football could not find an answer to Rutgers after scoring first to lose the last game of the season 41-14 on Senior Day at Spartan Stadium. With the loss, MSU’s season is officially over after failing to qualify for a bowl game with only five regular season wins.

The green and white got off to a positive start in the first couple minutes of the game, breaking a couple big runs off. Redshirt junior running back Nate Carter capped off the strong opening drive with a 26-yard rushing touchdown, his fifth of the season.

(CONTINUED) After the first couple of minutes though the Scarlet Knights took control for the rest of the evening. Rutgers rattled off 34 straight points until Spartan junior tight end Jack Velling caught his first touchdown pass of the season to stop the run midway through the fourth quarter.

We have a bright future even though we are bummed by the result of today,” Velling told WJR Correspondent Nick Lundberg after the game. “We got the best coaching staff in the nation, a great culture, and some key pieces for next year will be back. East Lansing is a great spot.”

The offensive line did not give sophomore quarterback Aidan Chiles much time in the pocket all afternoon long, allowing multiple sacks and racking up crucial penalties where scoring opportunities briefly presented themselves.

Two other big mistakes of the day for the Spartans were a failed fourth down conversion and a bobbled punt that ended up giving the ball right on the doorstep of the end zone for Rutgers.

The next key date for MSU is Monday, Dec. 9. That is the first day the transfer portal will open for business.
