DETROIT, Dec. 4, 2024 ~ Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan made a surprise announcement Wednesday morning, saying he would walk away from the Democrat Party to run as an independent candidate for Michigan governor.

He announced that he would not seek reelection for mayor in November, leaving room for a new top leader for Detroit. He will be running to fill a seat currently helmed by Democrat Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who will be termed limited in 2026.

I’m not running to be the Democrats‘ governor or the Republicans‘ governor. I’m running to be your governor,” Duggan said in a press release. “The political fighting and the nonsense that once held back Detroit is too often what we’re seeing across Michigan today. The current system forces people to choose sides—not find solutions. It’s time to change that. I intend to bring together Democrats, Republicans and independents—and our young people, far too many of whom have given up on our political system—together to move Michigan forward.

Stay tuned with WJR to keep up with Duggan’s gubernatorial race.
