LANSING, Dec. 16, 2024 ~ During a marathon legislative session Friday, state Republican members of the Michigan House walked out after Democrats chose not to take up bills aiming to cut back on state labor changes.
The bills would have scaled back expansion to earned sick leave laws and preserve the state’s tipped minimum wage, changes set to take place in January 2025. Earlier this year, the Michigan Supreme Court reversed changes made to the Michigan Paid Sick Leave and Michigan Minimum Wage Increase initiatives by Republican lawmakers in 2018. These were ballot initiatives that received enough signatures to be on the ballot that year, but the Republican-led legislature adopted the laws to later water them down in the lame-duck session, sparking outrage among activists.
