DETROIT, Dec. 27, 2024 ~ The Detroit Tigers bolstered their middle infield Friday afternoon, adding second baseman Gleyber Torres to a 1-year, 15 million dollar contract. Torres is coming off a World Series appearance with the New York Yankees and will sign for the same amount as pitcher Alex Cobb did with Detroit earlier this offseason.
The two-time all star hit 15 home runs last year to go along with a .257 batting average and 63 runs batted in. If he played in Detroit last season, he would have been second best on the team in batting average and RBIs while tied for third best in home runs.
After playing a lot of shortstop for the Yankees over the span of his six-year career, Torres will take over the second base position in 2025. Trey Sweeney and Javy Baez will continue their duties at short, while Colt Keith will begin taking reps at first base. First baseman Spencer Torkelson will need to improve on his bat-to-ball skills in order to have a premier role on the team this upcoming Spring.

(CONTINUED) Bringing Torres in fits the mold of player Detroit needs to improve on the miraculous run that pushed the team until the end in the American League Divisional Series. The roster was in need of a capable right-handed hitter to complement most of the left-handers, and Torres has shown to be consistent throughout his career. The Venezuelan native has slashed .265/.334/.441 with 138 home runs and 441 RBI since he joined Major League Baseball in 2018. 2019 was his best year to date, recording 38 home runs as well as coming up clutch in the postseason.
When addressing the media today, General Manager Scott Harris did not leave out the fact that the team is still going after top free agents. Japanese pitcher Roki Sasaki is at the top of the list for the team in the pitching market.
While Harris did not mention other players specifically, rumors have been mounting about third baseman Alex Bregman being linked to the Tigers. The team will look to keep adding to a promising lineup before Spring Training comes around in mid-February.
