MICHIGAN, Jan. 22, 2025 ~ Michigan’s Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson announced Wednesday that she is running for governor in the 2026 midterm elections.
Benson is the first major Democrat to announce their intentions to run to replace Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who will be term-limited in 2026. So far, Michigan Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt has announced he will run in the Republican primary and Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan is running as an independent. “My burning desire is to make sure government works well for every resident in our state,” Benson told WJR. “My goal as Secretary of State has been to make sure when people ask, ‘Does government work for me?’ they can look to our office and say ‘yes.’ That’s what I want for every resident of Michigan, for every agency in government.“
