DETROIT, Jan. 28, 2025 ~ It took just eight days for Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell to find his new offensive coordinator John Morton. The move follows former Lions play caller Ben Johnson leaving to take a head coach position with NFC North division rival Chicago.
Morton spent last season as the Denver Broncos passing game coordinator, helping develop a rookie quarterback into a leader of a playoff contending offense. Morton is familiar with Campbell, having served as the Lions senior offensive assistant in 2022. Morton also coached under Broncos head coach Sean Payton these past two seasons, a trait that Campbell shares after his time under Payton in New Orleans.
760 WJR’s own Guy Gordon, Jamie Edmonds, and Steve Courtney all shared their thoughts on the new hire and his ties to the city of Detroit.

(CONTINUED) During Morton’s time with the Lions, running back Jamaal Williams broke Barry Sanders’ single-season rushing touchdown record, tallying 17 total scores on the ground. Despite starting a first year quarterback, the Broncos were able to put together a top 10 scoring offense under Morton’s eye in 2024.
Morton joins new defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard in a staff full of fresh faces, who was promoted in place of Aaron Glenn who left to be head coach of the New York Jets.
The finale of the NFL season will take place in New Orleans for Super Bowl LIX on Sunday, Feb. 9. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m, stay tuned to WJR for coverage leading up to the biggest football game of the season between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles.
