MICHIGAN, Jan. 29, 2025 ~ Sen. Gary Peters‘ (D-MI) surprise announcement Tuesday that he would not seek re-election in 2026 has caused rumors to swirl on who will run to replace him.
A report from Al Weaver of The Hill stated that U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga (MI-3), U.S. Rep. John James (MI-10), former Senate candidate Mike Rogers, and former Colts head coach Tony Dungy all could run for the GOP nomination. On the Democrat side, Harbor Strategic Public Affairs CEO John Sellek told WJR that former Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg and Lieutenant Gov. Garlin Gilchrist may run for the seat. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has already stated she will not run for the seat.
