LANSING, Feb. 12, 2025 ~ The Michigan House GOP voted Tuesday to withold discretionary state funding to universities, cities, and other municipalities if they refuse to work with federal immigration enforcement agencies like ICE.
State House Speaker Matt Hall indroduced the legislation last week to disuade any local governments from being sanctuary cities amid a huge crackdown on undocumented immigrants under the Donald Trump administration. The resolution recieved criticisms from House Democrats and immigration advocates, claiming it will punish cities with large immigrant populations and is based on “xenophobic” beleifs about immigrants.

(CONTINUED) While proponents of Trump’s recent ICE raids and harsh immigration crackdown policies say that it’s meant to target immigrants who have committed violent crimes, many immigrant advocates argue many undocumented migrants without criminal charges, including those with federal protections, will be caught up in these ICE raids. A recent report from investigative news outlet Pro Publica found that less than half of the 8,200 people ICE arrested from Jan. 20 to Feb. 2 criminal convictions.
