MICHIGAN, Feb. 21, 2025 ~ Conservationists aiming to reel in the invasive sea lamprey population in the Great Lakes just saw a huge blow amid the Trump administration’s cuts to the federal government

As part of mass layoffs over Valentine’s Day weekend, about 14 US Fish and Wildlife Service workers a part of the lamprey program, based mostly in Michigan, were fired. Great Lakes fish advocates are growing concerned the invasive species could rebound after conservation efforts have reduced the population by 90% following the near-environmental collapse of the Great Lakes ecosystem.
