MICHIGAN, Feb. 27, 2025 ~ While Michigan hospitals have worked to fill numerous vacancies, the state still has thousands of vacancies that need to be filled.

A recent survey by the Michigan Hospital Association revealed there were over 19,000 job openings in hospitals across the state in 2024, including 4,700 nursing positions, a decrease of vacancies by 29% compared to 2023. Executive Vice President of the Michigan Hospital Association Laura Appel told WJR that many nurses are retiring due to many nurses in the state reaching retirement age, and is worried that federal cuts to Medicaid would exacerbate the issue.

Hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and home health care all have a dependence on Medicaid payments which sustain the operations and maintain the workforce,” Appel said.
