METRO DETROIT, March 3, 2025 ~ A section of I-696 will close for two years starting March 3 for a lengthy construction project.
The closure will be between Lahser Road in Southfield and I-75 in Royal Oak, forcing about 100,000 daily commuters to find alternate routes. MDOT Metro Region Communications Representative Diane Cross told WJR that the roadwork, which will reconstruct the freeway’s lane both east and westbound, needs to be done because the road is, “Very close to the end of its lifespan.”
