Detroit Tigers Lose Season Opener Against L.A. Dodgers

DETROIT, March 27, 2025 ~ The Detroit Tigers lost on Opening Day 5-4 Thursday night against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Detroit’s Cy Young pitcher Tarik Skubal threw five innings and gave up four runs. The Dodgers hit a combined three home runs during their World Series celebration game at Dodger Stadium, including one from National League MVP designated hitter Shohei Ohtani.

The Tigers finished the game 0-15 with runners in scoring position, leaving 11 batters on base. In the top of the ninth, Detroit had runners on first and second but could not capitalize, recording back-to-back outs.

Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson reached base in every plate appearance, racking up four walks and a solo home run.

(CONTINUED) Newly acquired second baseman Gleyber Torres had a solid first game in the batter’s box for the Tigers, tallying two singles in five at-bats. Fellow free agent acquisition Manuel Margot also had a productive debut, recording two singles and a run-batted-in while providing solid defense in right field. 

All-Star left fielder Riley Greene and second baseman Colt Keith struggled for Detroit on offense. They hit a combined 1-10 throughout the evening. 

Detroit will face L.A. two more times before heading to Seattle for another three game series with the Mariners. Former Dodgers pitcher Jack Flaherty is scheduled to start for Detroit tomorrow. First pitch is set for 10:10 p.m. The Tigers will celebrate Opening Day in Detroit against the Chicago White Sox on Friday, April 4.
