Former Michigan AG Mike Cox Joins Growing Field of Gubernatorial Candidates

MICHIGAN, April 16, 2025 ~ Former Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox announced Tuesday that he is running for Michigan governor.

The Republican joins a growing field of candidates looking to replace current Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who will be term-limited in the 2026 general election. U.S. Rep. John James (MI-10) and Minority Michigan Senate Leader Aric Nesbitt are his most notable competitors in the GOP primary, with Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, Lieutenant Gov. Garlin Gilchrist, and Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson running in the Democrat race. Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan is running as an independent candidate.
